Secondary education includes both middle and high school. In the 8th grade, in addition to learning compulsory subjects, students also choose electives. In the higher grades, math, English, natural and computer sciences, and social studies are mandatory. In the final year, students take the SAT exam, which is a standardized test required for admission into undergraduate programs of many colleges and universities in the US. The exam tests skills required for success in a college or university. It is made up of two levels: SAT I and SAT II. SAT I tests verbal and mathematical abilities. SAT IIs are exams on subjects of choice. SAT I exams are required by most colleges. Top-echelon universities often make it compulsory for students to pass one or more of the SAT IIs, as well.
Students who complete the 11th and 12th grades with passing grades receive a certificate of secondary education.
