In the US, higher education is made up of two levels -- undergraduate and graduate programs. After two years of undergraduate education, a student receives theAssociate's degree. After that, students are free to start a professional career, or they can continue their education (2 more years) toward the Bachelor’s degree. The most common undergraduate degrees are Bachelor of the Arts (BA) and the Natural Sciences (BS). One great feature of the undergraduate program is that it’s very flexible, and one can truly create a unique education.

After the Bachelor's degree, students can continue their education towards their Master's.
The level of knowledge required to obtain a Master's degree far exceeds that of a Bachelor's degree. Masters degrees are offered in many specialties, and there are two basic program paths: academic and professional.

In academic programs, emphasis is placed on the basis of research, research methodology and research specialty. The Master of Arts (MA) and Science (MS) degrees are usually awarded in the traditional humanities, natural sciences and the arts.

Seeking professional programs generally indicates that a student will not seek his or her Doctorate after graduating. These Master's degrees are often designated by specific descriptive titles such as Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Social Work (MSW), Master of Education (MEd), or a Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Other specialties in which you can get a professional Master's Degree include journalism, international relations, architecture, urban planning, public administration (MPA), and Public Policy (MPP).Master’s programs take 1.5 to 2 years.

Obtaining a Doctorate degree (PhD) takes three to six years (depending on how long it takes to write the thesis). Doctoral programs are more complex in their coursework. They also include seminars and writing a dissertation, which describes the student's original research, completed under the supervision of an advisor. A doctoral degree is awarded to those students who have conducted meaningful research, wrote a thesis describing the study, and successfully defended their work before a commission whose members specialize in that discipline. At the doctoral level, PhD is the most commonly awarded degree in academic disciplines. Other doctoral degrees are awarded primarily on the specific practical professions, for example, in the field of education (EdD or Doctor of Education) or in the field of Business Administration (DBA or Doctor of Business Administration).
